Tala reveals that she was there the day the ocean chose Moana and gave her the heart of Te Fiti, and still has it in her possession.

During the ceremony, Moana is nearly struck by a rogue purple thunderbolt from a storm that had mysteriously appeared above the village. In that moment, Moana meets Tautai Vasa, and sees a vision of her village and island being abandoned and overgrown. When she comes to afterwards and explains her vision, once the full story is explained, Moana decides she has to find Motufetu to save her family, people, and island from Nalo’s curse. The film was directed by Dave Derrick Jr., with music by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. One day, when Moana attempted to sail beyond the reef after an argument with her father, she got her foot injured when it was stuck on some coral. Moana attempted to hide her injured foot from her grandmother, but Tala was smart enough to see what happened and promised to not tell her father. At this, Moana was taken to a secret cave where Tala advised to bang a drum and that she would learn something of her heritage. However, during their journey, the comet explodes, indicating they have neared Motufetu, but are confronted by the Kakamora, who reveal that they too are trying to get home to their island, but can’t, especially with the giant clam blocking their way. One Kakamora, Kotu, decides to join Moana and sacrifices himself and Moana’s raft to save the ones of his fellow Kakamora as Moana, her crew, pets, and Kotu are swallowed by the giant clam.

Moana places the heart into the spiral on Te Kā’s chest, and the lava monster’s crust crumbles away, revealing the lush and radiant Te Fiti. After placing a shell on top of the stack of stones placed by all previous chiefs, Moana takes up her role as chieftess and wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging, accompanied by Maui. They are caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island, where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements. A “meta” version of the character appears with other Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). Later, when Ralph is falling from a tower and needs saving by the princesses, Moana causes water from a fountain to spiral upwards so that Elsa can freeze it into a slide to slow Ralph’s fall, saying “You’re Welcome” after saving him. They set sail once more, but a down-on-his-luck Maui feels unable to defeat Te Kā and restore the heart without his hook. Moana, wanting to get to the root of Maui’s self-doubt, tries to uncover the demigod’s backstory. This only angers Maui, which prompts Moana to confess her own feelings of self-doubt by revealing she is unsure why the ocean chose her. She further explains that despite this, she pushes herself in order to save her dying island, though she can only do so with Maui’s help.

Maui informs them to stay away from Matangi, but as he was about to leave, he sees Heihei and realizes that Moana is in danger. It fell to number six in its fifth weekend, due to competition from four new releases—Sing, Passengers, Why Him? Te Fiti, now fully restored and the curse lifted, believes that Maui is left to apologize for his actions, which he does. Maui, in return, is granted a new hook and flies off to meet with his villagers. Before leaving, Maui bids Moana farewell with a hug, thanking her for all she’s done.
There, she helps a struggling newborn sea turtle make its way to the ocean against predators, using a leaf. Just then, Moana is acquainted with the ocean, which reveals itself to have a mind of its own. Having witnessed her unselfish kindheartedness with the baby sea turtle, the ocean chooses her to receive the heart of Te Fiti, but when Tui arrives and takes Moana her back to the village, Moana inadvertently leaves the heart at the shore. A millennium later, Moana as a toddler discovers the heart as she is collecting shells near the ocean. After her chieftain father Tui orders her to return to the village, she never sees it until she has grown up.

She wakes up the next morning on a small island inhabited by Maui, who traps Moana in a cave after distracting her with a tune. After escaping the cave, the ocean sends Moana back on the sailboat to convince Maui. She shows him the heart and asks him to help her return it, but Maui backs away fearing that the heart is a trap for the person carrying it and that other creatures would kill to steal it for themselves. Three years after her adventure with the demigod Maui and the island goddess Te Fiti,c Moana spends her days exploring other islands near her home island of Motunui in the hope of finding people connected to the ocean.
Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu. Her morale restored, and with Loto having repaired their raft with materials from Tautai Vasa’s, they head for Motufetu, with the plan being for Maui to raise the island, then Moana will touch it, breaking the curse. They confront Te Kā, who Moana manages to outsmart in order to make it past Te Fiti’s barrier islands. Moana is thrown off her boat and is nearly killed by the lava demon until Maui suddently returns.
When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in hopes of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. Unwilling to lose his hook in another confrontation, Maui abandons a tearful Moana who asks the ocean to find someone else to restore the heart and loses hope. The ocean obliges and takes the heart, Moana breaks down crying feeling hopeless but Tala’s spirit appears, inspiring Moana to find her true calling. Maui returns, having had a change of heart, and buys Moana time to reach Te Fiti by fighting Te Kā, destroying his hook in the process. Moana discovers Te Fiti is missing, and realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, corrupted without her heart. Moana tells the ocean to clear a path, allowing her to return Te Fiti’s heart, and the restored goddess heals the ocean and islands of the blight.
